Welcome to Marshpoint Music
The elementary music program at Marshpoint incorporates a variety of teaching methods. The curriculum is based on the Kodály and Orff philosophies of music education. World Music Drumming is also incorporated in the classroom. This curriculum is highly structured and sequenced. The basic concepts of these methods include:
- Music is for EVERYONE and is necessary for healthy human development.
- It is important to start music education as early as possible. Aural/musical development is similar to language development, and the earlier children are exposed to music, the more success they will have.
- Folk songs are the primary source material for beginning music education. Folk songs provide music of the highest quality and preserve our national heritage.
- The voice is the main instrument. Music skills are first expressed with the voice and the body; instruments are viewed as an extension of these.
- "Ear-before-eye" — A sense of “inner hearing” should be developed through singing, dancing and playing musical games before any work with notation begins.
- Rhythm syllables (ta, ta-di, etc.) and solfege hand signals and pitch names (do, re, mi, etc.) are used to establish tonal and rhythmic relationships. These tools accommodate a variety of learning styles including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile.
- The goal is to make every child musically literate and develop a love for music. Each student will learn to read, write, compose, and improvise music at his/her own developmentally appropriate level.
